On Saturday June 20, 2009, Chirilagua, Alexandria gathered at Tenants and Workers United offices to honor the triumphs and achievements of the African-American community in the struggle for freedom. Hundreds of families turned out for an afternoon of BBQ, music, and dance.

“Juneteenth represents a victory for us all in our quest for economic and social justice,” said Lucero Beebe-Giudice spokesperson for Tenants and Workers United, “This day of celebration is an opportunity for different parts of our community to unite around the struggles and achievements of African-Americans in our community and begin building bridges to a future of justice for all.”

From gospel to rap and praise dance to step, young and old strut their stuff in homage to this important day. Amidst the festivity points of connection were found and the groundwork laid for future collaboration. As community member Blanca noted, “I didn’t know that the African Americans were religious like us. I like how they mention God in their music and dance. This is good.”
